Notes made 3/2/16 by ALFRED HOLT & Co., during conversation with Capt. LyCETT,
8.89. OANTA."
On arrival of this vessel in Australia 500 tins Opium were found stowed under a small quantity of coal remaining in the bunkers, This coal having been shipped at Glasgow it is practically certain that the Opium was also taken on board at that port. 389 tins were marked :-
AH KOW,
32, PITT STREET,
LIVERPOOL,
the remainder bearing a Hong Kong Chinese label.
The matter was taken up with the No. 1 fireman, who however denied any knowledge of Opium being on board the ship and the master has reason to believe that he really was not concerned in the attempted smuggling.
A few days prior to steamer sailing from Glasgow a substitute named *Chang Sow was shipped, but owing to alleged sickness he refused to sail, and was replaced by another sub- stitute fireman *Dan Bing. This man was most unsatisfactory during the whole voyage, The No. 1 could not control him and he was constantly very impudent to the Chief Engineer.
* Both these men were sent up to Glasgow from Liverpool.
